A perfumed and floral wine with aromas of sweet violets, lush red cherries, licorice and a touch of earth. Medium-bodied, crunchy and firm, with velvety tannins, crisp acidity, tight juicy length and a chewy finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Poggerino is one of those Chianti Classico estates that has built its reputation through focus rather than size. Based at Radda in Chianti and run by Piero Lanza, the organically farmed estate specialises in Sangiovese, producing wines that capture the higher altitude character of this cooler corner of the region. The straight Chianti Classico is a terrific introduction to the house, fragrant and energetic but with enough structure to be taken seriously.
Radda’s elevation and rocky galestro rich soils give Sangiovese a naturally fresh, savoury personality. Warm days develop flavour while cooler nights preserve acidity and perfume, and the 2024 leans into that brighter side of Chianti. Poggerino’s restrained handling keeps the focus on fruit and site, with cherry, herbs and fine tannin rather than sweetness or heavy oak.
Bright ruby crimson, the bouquet opens with Morello cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, followed by violet, blood orange and dried oregano. Fennel seed, anise, black tea and a touch of terracotta emerge with air. The palate is lively and beautifully dry, with juicy cherry and cranberry framed by mouthwatering acidity and fine, dusty tannins. Orange peel and Tuscan herbs add savoury bite before a persistent finish of red fruit, tea and spice.
A bowl of pappardelle with wild mushroom and pecorino would be right at home here, alongside pork and fennel sausages with white beans, eggplant parmigiana, grilled lamb with salsa verde or a mortadella and Taleggio pizza. Our pick is the sausages and white beans. Fennel, sage and rich pork alongside Sangiovese’s cherry fruit and acidity is rustic Tuscan happiness.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2034.
