A bright crimson red. Poised with aromas of perfectly ripened strawberries and raspberries, a little fresh mint and rose. Fills out nicely on the gently textured, medium-bodied and very nicely balanced palate. The tannins are silky and long and, as good as this is now, it will continue to blossom and improve over the next six to eight years.
95+ points Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
Out on the windswept edge of western Victoria, Henty is one of those regions that quietly builds a reputation among those paying attention, and Provenance has been at the forefront of showing what it can do. Founded by Scott Ireland, with winemaker Callum Powell shaping the wines today, the focus is firmly on cool climate expression, letting the long growing season and basalt based soils bring detail, tension and a natural savoury edge to Pinot Noir.
Red cherry and wild strawberry lead, joined by cranberry, dried herbs and a faint hint of spice. There is an earthy, almost forest floor character that builds with air, giving it that classic cool climate feel without ever becoming heavy. The tannins are fine and gently structured, carrying the wine with a quiet persistence, while a line of fresh acidity keeps everything lifted and precise. It feels composed and understated, more about finesse than power.
Drinking nicely now with a little time in the glass, though it will reward cellaring over the next six to ten years as those savoury, earthy notes deepen and the fruit settles into something more complex.
Think duck rillettes with cornichons, roast quail with herbs, or a mushroom and thyme tart that leans into its earthy side. It suits dishes that are subtle and layered, allowing the wine’s detail to really shine. Perfect for a slower evening, where the bottle can unfold at its own pace.
