In the rolling hills of Stellenbosch, Reyneke Wines has become one of South Africa’s leading voices for biodynamic farming and natural vineyard expression. The estate is run by Johan Reyneke, who converted the family farm to organic and later biodynamic practices, believing that healthy soils and balanced vineyards produce wines of greater purity and character. The Estate Range Chenin Blanc is sourced from vineyards rooted in decomposed granite and shale soils that give the wine both freshness and texture. Chenin Blanc has long been one of South Africa’s most important white varieties, and at Reyneke it is crafted with minimal intervention to allow the vineyard and vintage to shine through.
The wine shows a pale straw colour with bright green highlights. Aromas open with quince, green apple and ripe pear layered with citrus blossom and a gentle touch of honey. As the wine develops in the glass subtle notes of wet stone and almond add further complexity. The palate is vibrant and beautifully textured with flavours of lemon, orchard fruit and a hint of stone fruit supported by lively acidity and a fine mineral line.
There is a lovely balance between freshness and richness that carries through to a long clean finish. It drinks beautifully now and will continue to develop complexity over the next five to eight years. The wine sits comfortably alongside grilled seafood, roast chicken, fresh salads or light Mediterranean dishes.
