Abruzzo’s rolling hills and Adriatic breezes have long produced some of Italy’s most approachable and food friendly reds, and Riporta’s Small Batch Old Vines Sangiovese delivers exactly that kind of easy charm. Made from older vineyards that naturally produce lower yields and more concentrated fruit, this is a Sangiovese built around brightness, drinkability and classic Italian character rather than heavy extraction or oak.
The 2024 vintage is lively and generous, bursting with red cherry, wild raspberry and plum fruit alongside hints of dried oregano, cracked pepper and earthy spice. There is a lovely savoury edge beneath the juicy fruit, giving the wine more personality than many simple everyday reds. Fine tannins and fresh acidity keep everything energetic and balanced, while the old vine fruit adds a little extra depth and texture through the finish.
This absolutely belongs on the dinner table. Pizza topped with prosciutto and rocket, spaghetti with slow cooked tomato sauce or grilled lamb skewers would all be superb matches. It is also brilliant with lasagne, antipasti platters or crispy chicken schnitzel with lemon. Serve it slightly cool and it becomes the sort of relaxed, crowd pleasing red that fits just about any occasion, especially when there is plenty of food and conversation flowing.
