Bright and dry, bursting with lime, green apple and grapefruit for a crisp, refreshing German white.
The 2024 Rheingau Riesling Trocken is clear, refined and coolish on the elegant nose, with grassy and flinty notes as well as white fruit aromas and just an idea of yellow stone fruits. Vinified predominantly in stainless steel (95%), the wine is round and tastes almost off-dry on the palate, which makes it very pleasant and digestible already at this early stage. This is a delicious, frisky Riesling for many occasions. 12% stated alcohol.

The 2024 Riesling Rheingau is from Kiedrich and Hallgarten. A small portion, 5%, was made in large, neutral wood, with the rest in stainless steel. Green apple sprays from the glass, accompanied by a vivid zestiness. The palate is gorgeously tart, brisk, slender, refreshing and crystalline. If you want freshness, here it is. (Bone-dry)

Robert Weil has been synonymous with great Rheingau Riesling since 1875, when Dr Robert Weil established the estate in Kiedrich. Today fourth generation Wilhelm Weil oversees one of Germany’s most respected Riesling houses. While Gräfenberg and the other great Kiedrich vineyards occupy the collector end of the portfolio, the Rheingau Riesling Trocken is the wonderfully accessible doorway into the house style, made to deliver freshness, regional character and immediate pleasure.
Fruit is drawn from vineyards across the Rheingau, giving a broader expression than the Kiedrich and single vineyard bottlings. The challenging 2024 season demanded careful selection, but the resulting wines can have terrific natural acidity and aromatic lift. Here the emphasis is firmly on youthful fruit and clean, dry refreshment rather than the power and mineral intensity of Weil’s grander wines.
Very pale straw with green flashes, the bouquet is bright with lime, green apple and white peach, followed by grapefruit and lemon blossom. A little fresh ginger and lemongrass appear underneath. The palate is light, dry and wonderfully crisp, with citrus and green apple driven by lively acidity. Grapefruit peel adds a pleasantly bitter snap before a clean, refreshing finish of lime and fresh herbs.
Oysters with finger lime would be spot on, alongside prawn and chive dumplings, salt and pepper squid, Vietnamese rice paper rolls or grilled whiting with lemon and capers. Our pick is the oysters. Cold, briny shellfish and razor fresh Riesling requires very little further discussion.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2032.
