From the prized Collio hills of Friuli Venezia Giulia comes a Pinot Grigio that shows the variety in its more serious, site driven form. Ronco dei Tassi was established in the late 1980s by Fabio Coser and has become one of Collio’s most respected estates, known for hillside vineyards planted on ponca soils of marl and sandstone. These mineral rich layers, combined with Adriatic breezes and Alpine influence, allow slow, even ripening while preserving acidity and aromatic precision. The estate works with low yields and meticulous vineyard management, aiming to craft whites with texture, depth and unmistakable regional character rather than simple freshness.
Pale straw with soft golden reflections, the aromatics are refined and expressive. Ripe pear, white peach and yellow apple lead, followed by delicate citrus blossom and a subtle almond note. A faint mineral and saline edge hints at the ponca soils that define Collio wines.
On the palate it is dry and medium bodied with impressive structure for Pinot Grigio. Orchard fruit and gentle citrus glide across a fresh, vibrant backbone of acidity, while a lightly creamy texture adds weight and dimension. The finish is long and poised, showing notes of pear skin, almond and stony minerality. It is both elegant and quietly powerful, a step above everyday Pinot Grigio.
Pair with prosciutto San Daniele, grilled prawns, seafood pasta, herb roasted chicken or aged Montasio cheese. Delicious now for its purity and balance, it will cellar comfortably for five to seven years, developing subtle honeyed and nutty nuances while retaining freshness.
