Sanguine Estate Progeny Shiraz is a vibrant and approachable expression of Heathcote Shiraz, crafted to highlight the variety’s pure fruit character and the region’s distinctive mineral edge. Sanguine Estate is a family-run winery founded in 1997 by Tony and Linda Hunter, with their son Mark Hunter as winemaker. The estate sits on ancient Cambrian soils in the heart of Heathcote, central Victoria, which are famous for producing Shiraz with both power and elegance. The Progeny cuvée is designed to offer an earlier-drinking style while still carrying the hallmarks of Heathcote terroir and Sanguine’s meticulous winemaking.
The vineyard lies on deep, iron-rich red Cambrian earth, over 500 million years old, which provides excellent drainage and imparts a signature earthiness and spice to the wines. The warm, dry days of Heathcote’s continental climate are moderated by cool nights, allowing for even ripening and the development of rich, concentrated fruit balanced by freshness. The grapes are handpicked and fermented in small open-top vessels with gentle plunging to extract vibrant colour and flavour without over-extraction. Maturation takes place in a mix of seasoned French and American oak barrels to add texture and subtle complexity while keeping the focus on the fruit.
In the glass, Progeny Shiraz is a deep, youthful crimson. Aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, violets, and cracked pepper leap from the glass, with hints of spice and warm earth. The palate is medium to full bodied, plush and juicy, with dark fruit, fine tannins, and a gentle lift of acidity that gives the wine vibrancy and balance. The finish is smooth and lingering, with touches of pepper and savoury spice that reflect both variety and place.
This Shiraz is excellent with grilled lamb cutlets, barbecued beef, roasted eggplant with tahini, or hearty pasta dishes with rich tomato sauces. Its generous fruit and supple structure make it a versatile partner for both casual meals and more elevated fare. While ready to enjoy now, it can cellar gracefully for 5 to 8 years, gaining further savoury depth.
