Pale, almost water-white colour, with a spicy/nettley and yeast-estery bouquet which is immediately appealing and inviting. There are notes of musk sticks and pear-filled Danish pastry too. The palate follows on from there and is soft and rounded, with lovely subtle acidity, with the result that the wine is very approachable already, in its extreme youth. There could be a tickle of sweetness helping that balance. Delicious wine. 17 Oct 2024 Drink 2024–2036

An easy-drinking riesling of dictionary definition varietal character. Lemon, limes, ginger, red apple, a touch of sweet herbal lift, pink grapefruit tang and talc and bath salts dashed through. There's good flavour here and great, energising perfume – the wine feels fresh, crisp and refreshing, too. Ticks plenty of boxes, with the caveat that it isn't particularly complex or layered in detail, but sometimes the point is pitch-perfect summery drinking and immediate enjoyment, to which this wine excels.

Shaw + Smith’s Riesling from Adelaide Hills is a refreshing take on this classic varietal, offering a crisp, precise expression of cool-climate winemaking. It’s a wine that embodies the purity and finesse the region is known for, with vibrant aromas and a clean, elegant finish.
The nose greets you with bright citrus—lime and grapefruit—layered with white florals and a touch of wet slate, hinting at its mineral core. On the palate, it’s zesty and fresh, with tangy lemon and green apple flavors balanced by taut acidity and a whisper of spice. There’s a finesse to the texture that makes each sip both lively and satisfying.
Sourced from high-altitude vineyards, the cooler temperatures allow the grapes to develop their hallmark acidity while preserving delicate aromatics. Fermentation in stainless steel ensures the wine stays crisp and vibrant, letting the fruit shine without distraction.
This Riesling is a versatile companion at the table, pairing seamlessly with fresh oysters, grilled prawns, or light vegetarian dishes like asparagus salad. It’s equally enjoyable on its own—perfect for sunny afternoons or casual get-togethers. While already delightful, it has the structure to age gracefully, evolving more complex characters over the next decade.
