There’s a freshness and vitality running through all the ’24 chardonnays, which is pleasing to witness. In a way, the Reserve is reserved, a bit of coaxing needed to show off its touch of lemon and grapefruit, lime blossom, the merest hint of struck match, beeswax and spicy oak. The palate is refined and even, a little textural with fine, cleansing and mouth-watering acidity. I’d like to sit back at lunch with a glass or two of this and then take the rest of the day off. So, I did.

Stonier Reserve Chardonnay is the pinnacle of the estate’s white wine production, crafted from the finest parcels across their Merricks and surrounding Mornington Peninsula vineyards. Established in 1978 by Brian Stonier, the winery was one of the first to recognise the Peninsula’s potential for producing world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These sites benefit from a cool maritime climate moderated by Western Port Bay, with ancient volcanic and sandy loam soils lending both tension and layered complexity to the wines. The Reserve Chardonnay is made in small quantities, only in vintages where fruit quality reaches the highest level.
Under the stewardship of winemaker Julian Grounds, the wine’s style is one of elegance, precision, and textural depth. Fruit is hand-picked and gently whole-bunch pressed, with fermentation taking place in French oak barriques, a proportion of which are new. Wild yeast fermentation adds subtle savoury complexity, and extended lees contact builds mid-palate richness while retaining freshness. Minimal intervention allows the vineyard character to shine through, reflecting Stonier’s commitment to site expression.
In the glass, the wine offers aromas of white nectarine, lemon curd, and fresh grapefruit layered with hints of almond, flint, and delicate oak spice. The palate is finely structured with vibrant citrus and stone fruit purity, balanced by creamy texture and a chalky mineral drive. Subtle notes of brioche and hazelnut emerge as it opens, leading to a long, saline finish that speaks of the Mornington Peninsula’s coastal influence.
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with seared scallops and beurre blanc, grilled spatchcock with lemon and herbs, or a saffron and seafood risotto. It is equally compelling alongside roasted cauliflower with almond cream. While already showing exceptional balance, it will evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, developing richer nutty and honeyed complexity with age.
