A forward and accessible wine with a distinctly purple fruit profile; blackberry, violet and a hint of subtle oak spice. Grainy tannins with a peppery finish provide shape to the nicely delineated, pure expression of mid-weight fruit. A year or two in bottle will add complexity though it is balanced and supple enough to be enjoyed now 25 Sep 2025 Drink 2025–2030

Te Kairanga Estate Pinot Noir is a classic expression of Martinborough’s distinctive terroir, combining vibrant red fruit, savoury complexity, and fine structure. Te Kairanga was founded in 1984 on land originally owned by Martinborough’s namesake, John Martin, and has grown into one of the region’s leading producers. The estate focuses on Pinot Noir, taking advantage of Martinborough’s ideal growing conditions: free-draining alluvial soils, cool nights, and long, dry summers that deliver consistently ripe, balanced fruit.
The vineyards sit on the Martinborough Terrace, a gently sloping gravelly terrace formed by the ancient Ruamahanga River. These soils, rich in gravel and silt, offer excellent drainage and encourage deep vine roots, resulting in low yields of concentrated grapes. The region’s cool-climate conditions mean slow, even ripening, preserving natural acidity while building layers of flavour. Fruit is hand harvested and fermented in small open-top tanks with gentle plunging to extract fine tannins. A portion of whole bunches is included for added perfume and structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, typically around 20 to 25 percent new, for 10 to 12 months to bring finesse and subtle spice.
In the glass, Te Kairanga Estate Pinot Noir shows a bright garnet colour. Aromas of red cherry, raspberry, violets, and dried herbs are complemented by hints of spice and forest floor. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with juicy red fruit, supple tannins, and a mineral thread that gives the wine focus and length. A savoury undertone typical of Martinborough adds complexity, while vibrant acidity keeps it fresh and balanced.
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes like duck breast with cherry sauce, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, or roasted beetroot with goat’s cheese. It also works well with charcuterie and soft washed-rind cheeses. While appealing young for its purity and brightness, it can cellar gracefully for 6 to 10 years, developing earthy, gamey notes with age.
