Very deep, saturated purple-red colour with understated but plum and graphite shiraz aromas that lead into a palate of good concentration and abundant tannins, albeit with smoothly rounded edges. A hint of dark chocolate. Fleshy, ample and long-lasting on the palate. Impressive potential: just needs more time for the full payoff. Drink 2026–2041.
95 points The Real Review (Huon Hooke, March 2026)
The Gask is Torbreck’s tribute to the high country of Eden Valley, drawing on old vine Shiraz grown at elevation where cooler nights preserve perfume and structure.
Heroic in style, it still retains the cooler edge and tighter structure that make the great Shiraz wines from Eden Valley famous. Fruit is sourced from mature, low yielding vines rooted in leaner soils that naturally produce intensity with finesse. Fermentation is handled to build depth without excess weight, and maturation in French oak adds polish and subtle spice. The aim is a wine of power framed by elegance, capturing Eden Valley’s cooler influence.
Deep crimson in colour, the aromas open with blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry layered with violet, pepper and graphite. The palate is full bodied yet finely structured, with concentrated dark fruit wrapped in firm tannins and fresh acidity. Savoury spice and subtle oak weave through a long, persistent finish that feels focused and balanced.
It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef and richly flavoured dishes. While impressive now with air, it will cellar confidently for fifteen to twenty years, developing earthy, savoury complexity.
Torbreck was founded in the 1990s by David Powell with a vision inspired by the Rhône and built around ancient Barossa vineyards. Today Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell continues that philosophy, focusing on site selection, careful extraction and patient maturation.
