Hedonistic and energetic old vine Shiraz from the rocky heights of Barossa's Eden Valley
The Gask is the Eden Valley Old Vine Shiraz in the collection, and it is a hedonistic and spicy wine, a full-frontal assault on all we know about elite Eden Shiraz, but at a much more affordable price! It comes from high-altitude, stony, dry land laden with rocks and mineral deposits. And guess what, this wine is Asterix’s magic potion in the glass, with Obelix’s menhir’s forming the immovable power source in The Gask’s core. Velvety, cooling, bright, and bloody, but also phenomenally exotic and rose petal-soaked, this is an amazing wine, and it is likely to put an Eden Valley aficionado on high alert!

The 2024 The Gask hails from the Eden Valley—one of my favorite places in this beautiful region—and it leads with graphite, jasmine tea, blueberry, raspberry, pomegranate and shale. The fruit from here brings with it a shiny polish, a glittery sort of profile, while being underpinned at all times by a profusion of earthy, savory tannins. I love this contrast that this growing area can provide. It has power and detail, freshness and depth. This is excellent. Drink to 2040.

This is Shiraz from the Eden Valley. Bold and rich with spice, herbs, black cherries and plums. It’s peppery with nice depth of fruit but also a sense of freshness. Beautifully layered cherry and berry fruits. Nicely structured.

Eden Valley shiraz, magenta-splashed crimson, with bright damson plum, blueberry and black cherry fruits, hints of baking spices, licorice, sage, graphite, crushed stone, almond blossom, dried meats and sandalwood. Plush and opulent with a gentle slide of nutty oak and olive tapenade in a silken travel across the palate. Lovely energy and chalky structure here, too, the fruit and spice dark and pure on the finish.

Very deep, saturated purple-red colour with understated but plum and graphite shiraz aromas that lead into a palate of good concentration and abundant tannins, albeit with smoothly rounded edges. A hint of dark chocolate. Fleshy, ample and long-lasting on the palate. Impressive potential: just needs more time for the full payoff. Drink to 2041.

Deep crimson. Intense black cherry, black olive, liquorice aromas. Very deep black cherry, black olive, cedary flavours, attractive mid-palate concentration and chocolaty/muscular tannins. Finishes flinty/graphite firm and tight. Now–2035

The Gask is Torbreck’s tribute to the high country of Eden Valley, drawing on old vine Shiraz grown at elevation where cooler nights preserve perfume and structure.
Heroic in style, it still retains the cooler edge and tighter structure that make the great Shiraz wines from Eden Valley famous. Fruit is sourced from mature, low yielding vines rooted in leaner soils that naturally produce intensity with finesse. Fermentation is handled to build depth without excess weight, and maturation in French oak adds polish and subtle spice. The aim is a wine of power framed by elegance, capturing Eden Valley’s cooler influence.
Deep crimson in colour, the aromas open with blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry layered with violet, pepper and graphite. The palate is full bodied yet finely structured, with concentrated dark fruit wrapped in firm tannins and fresh acidity. Savoury spice and subtle oak weave through a long, persistent finish that feels focused and balanced.
It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef and richly flavoured dishes. While impressive now with air, it will cellar confidently for fifteen to twenty years, developing earthy, savoury complexity.
Torbreck was founded in the 1990s by David Powell with a vision inspired by the Rhône and built around ancient Barossa vineyards. Today Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell continues that philosophy, focusing on site selection, careful extraction and patient maturation.
