2024 Torbreck The Struie Shiraz 3L Jeroboam, Barossa

Made from 70% Barossa and 30% Eden Valley Shiraz, this is a stunningly deep and cool wine, with wells of dark fruit and a sleek feel throughout.  The black-ink hue, with purple fruit, punctuated by dry spices, and with an incredibly long finish, this is an erudite The Struie, and the balance and class here are world-class.  This is certainly one of the longest and most elegant The Struie I have tasted.  While the overall theme is elegance, the finish is rigid and commanding, guaranteeing a long life ahead here.

Deep ruby and purple hues stain the glass while the nose leaps with raspberry and blueberry fruit, violets and then a deeper note of nori and undergrowth. The palate brims with blueberry and plum fruit but with a suppleness and balance that is immediately intriguing. Sandy tannins keep it in check and allow it to linger long on the tongue. As it unfurls, wakame and rosemary add more complexity and detail into the very long finish. A wine you can contemplate deeply now and that will reward further cellaring. Drink to 2041.

Deep, dark red-purple colour with terrestrial aromas summning dry earth, terracotta, forest underbrush on a hot day, and chocolate. Full bodied and fleshy with loads of supple ripe tannins and smooth, supple texture. There's a subtle vegetable note that reminds us we are in Eden Valley for at least part of the wine—traces of sage and raspberry that are typical of the higher country. The wine has elegance and harmony aplenty.

The 2024 The Struie is from Barossa Valley (70%) and the balance Eden Valley. The blend composition changes year to year. This is silky and dark, velvety and intense in the mouth. I love the hedonistic way of this wine—it carries the alcohol and the weight with ease. While ripe and powerful, it feels effortless and polished. The blue fruit/graphite component contributed by the Eden Valley fruit is an important part of the way this wine tastes. Drink to 2039.

Deep crimson. Lovely pure blackberry pastille, dark chocolate, with musky, cinnamon notes. Densely concentrated blackberry pastille, praline, espresso flavours, fresh bittersweet/graphite tannins, brilliant viscosity and well-balanced toasty/roasted hazelnut notes. Some liquorice notes at the finish with quartz/touch sherbet acidity. Very appealing Barossa shiraz showing lovely density and flow. 70% Barossa Valley, 30% Eden Valley. Drink to 2034.

A deeply fruited shiraz, 70% Barossa Valley and 30% Eden Valley. An impenetrable magenta/crimson hue. Plush aromas of blackberry, black cherry and blood plum fruits cut with hints of baking spices, bay leaf, dark chocolate, clove, mace, crushed rock and blackforest cake. It's a strong vintage. The fruit is deep, glossy and darkly spiced, with fine-grained tannins and black cherry-skin acidity, and there's a distinct earthen aspect to the lengthy finish. Drink to 2041.

Blending fruit from elevated Eden Valley sites with warmer Barossa Valley vineyards, this Shiraz sits at the intersection of power and freshness. The Struie is designed to marry altitude driven perfume with valley floor depth, giving a wine that feels both muscular and lifted. Torbreck uses this bottling to explore contrast, cool climate spice meeting Barossa generosity.

Winemaking is shaped to emphasise structure and polish. Careful extraction builds fine tannin while preserving aromatics, and maturation adds spice and frame without dulling the fruit. The result is layered and energetic rather than heavy.

The palate is full bodied yet balanced, with dark fruit wrapped in firm, silky tannins and bright acidity.
