Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay is a powerful yet finely controlled expression of one of New Zealand’s most distinctive vineyard landscapes. Trinity Hill has been a defining voice of the Gimblett Gravels since the appellation’s earliest days, and under the guidance of chief winemaker Warren Gibson, the winery has consistently shown how this stony, free draining terrain can produce Chardonnay of depth, texture and tension. The Gimblett Gravels are formed from ancient river deposits, dominated by greywacke stones and gravel that radiate heat during the day and drain freely, naturally limiting vine vigour and producing concentrated, flavour driven fruit.

The Chardonnay is grown on these gravelly soils, where warm days build richness while cool nights preserve acidity and structure. Fruit is hand harvested at optimal balance, then handled with a thoughtful, low intervention approach in the winery. Fermentation takes place in French oak, with a mix of wild and cultured yeasts depending on the parcel, followed by extended lees ageing to build texture and savoury complexity. Oak is used with intent, present but never dominant, allowing fruit, site and structure to remain clearly defined.

The aromatics are layered and inviting. Ripe stone fruit sits at the core, peach, nectarine and yellow plum, supported by citrus peel and subtle floral notes. Beneath the fruit lies a savoury thread of almond meal, cashew and gentle struck flint, reflecting both lees work and the mineral nature of the Gravels. With air, notes of brioche, oatmeal and soft spice emerge, adding depth without weight.

The palate is broad yet focused. Stone fruit and citrus flow through a creamy, textured mid palate, driven by firm acidity that keeps the wine energetic and long. Flavours of peach skin, lemon curd, nougat and subtle spice build in layers, finishing with a dry, mineral edge and a gentle savoury grip. It is generous without being heavy, and structured for development, evolving beautifully over eight to twelve years into deeper nutty, honeyed and smoky complexity while retaining its core freshness.

A natural partner for roast chicken, pork with crackling, scallops, lobster, creamy mushroom dishes or aged soft cheeses. Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay is a confident, site expressive wine that shows just how compelling Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay can be when gravel, climate and restraint align.
