The 2024 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Haut de la Roche is another of the high points in the range this year, offering up aromas of white flowers, crisp orchard fruit and freshly baked bread, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, satiny and racy palate with chalky depth and a saline finish. It's another success for this consistently excellent cuvée.

The 2024 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Haut de la Roche, which is picked as late as possible, has a bright, minerally bouquet that has more energy and tension than the previous vintage. The palate is very well balanced with a lovely rondeur, counterbalanced by the crisp acidity and tension. Maybe it does not quite kick on towards the finish like Verget’s best cuvées in ’24, but it does feel very persistent.

Jean-Marie Guffens founded Verget in 1990, establishing a reputation for some of the most expressive and individual Chardonnays in southern Burgundy. Working closely with growers and selecting fruit from exceptional vineyard sites, Verget has become a favourite among Burgundy enthusiasts for wines that combine richness, energy and a strong sense of place.
Le Haut de la Roche comes from Pouilly-Fuissé in the Mâconnais, where limestone rich soils and elevated vineyard positions help Chardonnay retain freshness alongside its naturally generous fruit. The 2024 vintage's cooler growing conditions suit this style particularly well, producing a wine with lively acidity, elegant fruit and finely judged richness.
Bright pale gold with subtle green reflections. White peach, ripe pear and lemon curd mingle with acacia blossom, toasted almond and a hint of crushed limestone. The palate is beautifully textured, with succulent stone fruit, fresh citrus acidity and a gentle creamy richness. Notes of hazelnut, lemon zest and savoury mineral character carry through a long, refined finish.
Try it with grilled snapper and green olive tapenade, ricotta and spinach agnolotti with sage butter, or Japanese miso glazed eggplant with sesame. Its richness also makes it a lovely partner for baked crab with fresh herbs and a crisp breadcrumb topping.
Cellaring: Drink 2026 to 2034. Already appealing for its generous fruit, with the freshness to develop greater complexity over several years.
