Wittmann Aulerde Riesling Grosses Gewächs offers lime, peach and chalky minerality with Rheinhessen elegance and longevity.
The very exciting nose of licorice, white thorn blossoms and Mirabelle plums pulls you into this compact and impressively structured dry riesling that deftly combines warm and cool elements. Then comes the compact and well-structured finish. From vines planted from 1949 to 1951. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.
95 points James Suckling
The Wittmann family have been cultivating vines in Rheinhessen for more than three centuries, with Philipp Wittmann recognised as one of Germany's leading exponents of organic and biodynamic viticulture. His meticulous approach has earned the estate international acclaim for Rieslings that combine remarkable precision with a profound expression of vineyard and vintage.
Aulerde is one of Rheinhessen's oldest and most distinguished vineyards, its deep limestone rich soils producing Rieslings of generosity, structure and striking mineral character. Compared with the taut precision of Kirchspiel and Morstein, Aulerde often reveals a broader, more textured expression while retaining the freshness and elegance that define the Wittmann style.
The colour is a brilliant pale gold with youthful green highlights. Aromas of lime zest, white peach and ripe grapefruit are layered with white flowers, crushed chalk and subtle herbal notes. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully poised, combining vibrant citrus and stone fruit with fine texture and crystalline acidity. A lingering chalky mineral thread carries through the long, refined finish, promising exceptional cellaring potential.
A superb match for grilled lobster, John Dory with beurre blanc, roast guinea fowl, white asparagus or wild mushroom risotto. Although irresistible in its youth, this is a Riesling that will continue to evolve beautifully for two decades or more.
