Some of the finest white wines of the Northern Rhône come not from the famous hill of Hermitage but from carefully tended parcels scattered along the steep granite slopes of Saint Joseph. Yves Cuilleron has been one of the region's leading figures since taking over the family domaine in 1987, expanding it into one of the Rhône's benchmark producers while maintaining a relentless focus on quality. Widely respected for his work with Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, Cuilleron consistently produces wines that combine richness, precision and a strong sense of place.

The Lombard cuvée is sourced from old vine Marsanne planted on Saint Joseph's granite terraces, where low yields and deep root systems contribute concentration and complexity. The 2024 vintage has delivered beautifully expressive fruit, allowing the variety's natural generosity to shine while retaining the freshness that defines the best Northern Rhône whites. Careful élevage adds texture and depth without masking the vineyard character.

Bright pale gold in colour, the aromas unfold with white peach, ripe pear and preserved lemon, followed by notes of acacia blossom, honeysuckle and fresh almond. As the wine opens, hints of beeswax, fennel seed and crushed granite emerge, adding layers of intrigue. The palate is beautifully textured, combining stone fruit richness with a distinctive mineral edge. Flavours of orchard fruits, citrus oil and roasted nuts glide across the tongue, supported by vibrant acidity and a silky, mouth filling texture. The finish is long, savoury and wonderfully persistent.

This is a superb partner for roast pork with fennel, grilled Moreton Bay bugs, seared scallops with cauliflower purée or a wild mushroom and tarragon tart. It also shines alongside aged Comté or nutty alpine cheeses. While delicious in its youth, the concentration and balance suggest it will evolve beautifully over eight to twelve years, developing the honeyed and complex character for which great Marsanne is prized.
