It’s grown on three (estate) vineyard sites, planted in 1976, 1997 and 2004 respectively. It sees 15% new oak. Such a pleasure. This is a lovely expression of Pinot Noir. It’s earthen and undergrowth-y and cherried and spicy, with squeaky/grapey tannin and a keen juiciness through the finish. 100% yes to this. This wine has Bannockburn written all over it.

93 points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Bannockburn 1314 A.D. Pinot Noir from Geelong is a bright, savoury and beautifully expressive cool climate Pinot that captures the essence of Bannockburn’s estate vineyards without the heavier structure of the single block wines. The fruit is sourced from parcels planted on volcanic basalt, limestone and ancient clay loams around the estate, soils that naturally deliver lifted aromatics, fine tannins and a gently earthy undertone. Geelong’s cool nights and long ripening season keep the acidity crisp, while the warm afternoon breezes help the fruit develop flavour complexity without losing delicacy. Bannockburn’s winemaking approach remains wonderfully hands off: hand picking, partial whole bunch for fragrance and structure, wild fermentation, and maturation in seasoned French barrels so the wine stays pure and uncluttered.

The nose is lively and inviting with red cherry, raspberry and cranberry at the fore, joined by hints of strawberry leaf, rose petal and pomegranate. Beneath the brightness sits a savoury layer of warm earth, subtle spice, dried thyme and a faint mineral echo that speaks of Geelong’s basalt rich soils. As the wine opens, touches of plum skin, orange peel and soft cedar fill out the aromatic frame.

The palate is fresh, supple and beautifully balanced. Juicy red fruits glide across fine, powdery tannins that give the wine shape without heaviness. Flavours of cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, rhubarb and subtle spice develop alongside earthy nuance and a gentle herbal lift. The acidity is clean and energetic, guiding everything into a long, dry and quietly refined finish with lingering red berries and savoury detail. It is a Pinot made for drinking rather than brooding, though a few years in bottle will add soft truffle and forest floor complexity.

Brilliant with roast duck, grilled salmon, charred vegetables, mushroom tarts, chicken with herbs, charcuterie, soft cheeses or casual weeknight pasta. Serve with a light chill in warmer weather for even more aromatic lift.
