Bannockburn 1314 A.D. Shiraz from Geelong is a beautifully distinctive cool climate expression, far removed from the richer styles found inland, yet full of depth, spice and that unmistakable Bannockburn savoury edge. The estate’s vineyards sit on ancient basalt, limestone and clay loams, soils that naturally give Shiraz lifted aromatics, fine tannins and a mineral line that runs straight through the wine. Geelong’s long, even growing season and cool nights allow slow, steady ripening, building flavour complexity while keeping acidity bright. The Bannockburn team treats the fruit with the same gentle philosophy seen across the estate: hand picking, wild fermentation, a measured use of whole bunches for fragrance and structure, and maturation in seasoned French oak so the fruit and site remain the focus rather than the barrels.

The nose is vibrant and layered, showing blackberry, dark cherry and plum woven through with pepper, violets and subtle blue fruit lift. Beneath the brightness is a savoury foundation of warm earth, cured meat, dried herbs and a whisper of graphite that nods to Geelong’s volcanic soils. As the wine opens, nuances of cocoa, spice, olive tapenade and a touch of cedar create further dimension without heaviness.

The palate is sleek, mid weighted and beautifully poised. Juicy dark fruits glide across fine, chalky tannins that feel tightly woven yet supple. Flavours of black cherry, plum skin, cranberry and subtle blueberry interplay with black pepper, spice, dried herbs and gentle earthy depth. Acidity is bright and refreshing, giving the wine drive and lift, while the oak sits quietly in the background, adding shape but never distraction. The finish is long, dry and savoury, leaving echoes of pepper, berries and cool stone. A few years of cellaring will bring more gamey, truffle and leathery nuance.

Brilliant with roast lamb, grilled sausages, peppered steak, mushroom ragù, barbecued vegetables, charcuterie, medium aged cheddar or a simple wood fired pizza. Serve with a light chill in warmer months to highlight its spice and aromatics.
