2025 Chatto Isle Pinot Noir, Huon Valley

The flagship pinot noir features fruit from Jim and Daisy Chatto's property in Glaziers Bay in the Huon Valley. It's a vineyard selection of the best blocks and clones of a particular vintage, 15% whole bunch this year. It's a beautiful wine; lithe, intricate and complex, with fine, feathery tannins and bright maritime acidity. Red and dark cherries flecked with raspberry, exotic spice, crushed stone, undergrowth, kombu, poached rhubarb and dried meats. Finely weighted, with a harmonious, textural flow on the palate, flavours drawing out nicely. Just a sprinkle of meadow herbs joins that pure, spicy fruit on the exit. Top notch. Drink to 2038.

The 2025 vintage of the Isle comes from the ‘bookends’ of the vineyard. It’s a blend of Pinot clones, with the 777 contributing to 80% of the wine, complimented by Abel (13.5%) and the 667 (6.5%). The fruit was hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts ferment and a 15% whole bunch inclusion, the wine matured in seasoned one- and three-year-old French oak puncheons.

“A darker spectrum of fruit coupled with a denser layering of tannins. More reserved than Intrigue, yet more volume of fruit and more power. Always a great drink on release, that rewards time in the cellar.”

Jim Chatto's obsession with Pinot Noir has taken him around the world but it was Tasmania that had the strongest pull. After years of searching, he found his place at Glaziers Bay in the Huon Valley, right on the edge of viticultural possibility. The Isle vineyard planted in 2007 remains the heart of Chatto Wines. A small and carefully chosen family of Tasmanian wines has grown around it, each one a conversation with the variety and the site, driven by an insatiable curiosity for Pinot Noir.
