From the dramatic terraces of Te Muna Road in Martinborough comes a Sauvignon Blanc that shows depth and structure well beyond the stereotype of the variety. Craggy Range was founded in 1998 by Terry and Mary Peabody with a clear vision to craft world class, site specific wines in New Zealand. The Te Muna vineyard, planted on ancient river terraces of free draining gravels and limestone influenced soils, has become one of the estate’s flagship sites. Martinborough’s cool climate, strong winds and long growing season allow Sauvignon Blanc to ripen slowly, building aromatic intensity while preserving vibrant natural acidity.
Pale straw with green highlights, the aromatics are layered and expressive. Lime zest, passionfruit and grapefruit lead, followed by blackcurrant leaf, fresh herbs and a subtle mineral edge. There is a clarity and precision to the bouquet that reflects both vineyard site and meticulous winemaking.
On the palate it is dry, concentrated and beautifully structured. Citrus and tropical notes sit over a firm spine of acidity, giving energy and length. The gravel soils contribute a flinty, chalky texture that adds depth, while careful handling in the winery provides balance without overt oak influence. The finish is long, crisp and mineral driven, lingering with lime peel and herbal freshness.
Pair with freshly shucked oysters, grilled prawns, goat cheese salad, Thai green curry or herb crusted white fish. Delicious now for its vibrancy and focus, it will also reward short to medium term cellaring over five to eight years, developing added complexity while retaining its freshness.
