2025 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose, Provence

Domaine Tempier is one of the great estates of Provence, with the Tempier family farming at Le Plan du Castellet since the nineteenth century. Its modern story really begins with Lucie “Lulu” Tempier and her husband Lucien Peyraud, who became passionate champions of Bandol and were instrumental in securing the appellation in 1941. Today the domaine remains family owned, and its rosé has become a benchmark, proving pale pink wine can have genuine pedigree, character and a very serious following.

Bandol’s sun drenched, terraced vineyards sit within sight of the Mediterranean, with limestone rich soils and the cooling influence of the sea helping preserve freshness. Mourvèdre gives Tempier Rosé much of its distinction, supported by Grenache and Cinsault. Rather than being simply delicate and pretty, the 2025 has the structure, texture and savoury character to sit confidently at the table and even reward a little bottle age.

Pale salmon with copper flashes. Wild strawberry, white peach and pink grapefruit lead into blood orange, melon and delicate blossom. Fennel, citrus peel and a faint herbal note add complexity, with a salty Mediterranean character underneath. The palate is dry and beautifully textured, carrying red berries and stone fruit through bright acidity before grapefruit, gentle spice and salinity take over on the long, savoury finish.

Bouillabaisse is almost impossible to resist here, especially loaded with red mullet, mussels and prawns with saffron rouille alongside. Grilled octopus with tomato and olives, tuna niçoise, garlicky prawns or zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta would keep the Provençal mood going nicely. This is rosé worth cooking for rather than merely opening beside the pool.
