When Angelo Gaja joined forces with Sicilian winemaker Alberto Graci, the result was IDDA, one of the most intriguing projects on Mount Etna. The name means she in the local dialect, an affectionate reference to the volcano that dominates the surrounding landscape. While the Gaja family is celebrated for its great Piedmont reds, this collaboration explores the distinctive character of Sicily's indigenous varieties and volcanic vineyards. The Rosato is a particularly charming addition to the collection, capturing Etna's freshness and elegance in a wonderfully expressive pink wine.
Produced from Nerello Mascalese, the grape responsible for many of Etna's finest reds, the 2025 Rosato reflects the cooler conditions and volcanic soils of the mountain's southwestern slopes. Altitude and significant differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures help preserve natural acidity, while gentle pressing and careful fermentation maintain the wine's delicate colour and aromatic character. The result is a dry, finely textured rosé that favours subtlety and savoury detail over overt fruit sweetness.
Delicate pale salmon pink with copper reflections. Wild strawberry, pink grapefruit and redcurrant mingle with orange blossom, rose petal and a hint of fresh thyme. The palate is bright and beautifully balanced, with crisp red berries, citrus peel and a subtle mineral character. A gentle savoury note and a touch of sea salt add interest, while refreshing acidity carries everything through a clean, persistent finish. There is an appealing combination of delicacy and substance, making this a rosé that feels equally comfortable as an aperitif or alongside a proper meal.
Grilled prawns with lemon and olive oil, tuna crudo with citrus or calamari with parsley and garlic would all be excellent companions. It would also be delicious with caponata, zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta or a simple tomato and burrata salad. Serve well chilled, preferably somewhere with sunshine and a long lunch ahead.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2029. Best enjoyed for its youthful freshness and delicate fruit, although the structure of Nerello Mascalese should allow a few years of graceful development.
