Kir Yianni Paranga White has peach, pear and citrus with floral lift, bright acidity and a crisp refreshing finish from Macedonia.
Kir Yianni was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris, one of the most influential figures in modern Greek wine, after he left the family company to establish his own estate in northern Greece. Today his son Stellios Boutaris leads the next generation, with vineyards centred around Naoussa and Amyndeon. Paranga sits at the relaxed, immediately drinkable end of the range and is a terrific introduction to the freshness of northern Greek whites.
The blend centres on Roditis and Malagousia, two native Greek varieties that complement each other nicely. Roditis contributes citrus, acidity and a lightly savoury edge, while Malagousia adds peach, flowers and aromatic lift. Macedonia’s elevation and cool nights are important here, allowing the 2025 to retain plenty of freshness despite Greece’s abundant sunshine.
Pale straw with green highlights. White peach, Nashi pear and green apple open the nose, followed by lemon blossom, grapefruit and a little fresh melon. Fennel and delicate herbs sit underneath. The palate is light, juicy and dry, with peach and pear through the middle, bright citrus acidity and a gentle softness to the texture. Lemon and grapefruit sharpen the finish with a faint salty, herbal note.
Grilled prawns with lemon and oregano would be terrific, alongside calamari, spanakopita, zucchini fritters with feta and mint or grilled sardines with parsley and lemon. Our pick is the zucchini fritters, crisp at the edges with plenty of feta, mint and a spoonful of tzatziki alongside.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2029.
