A deep purple in the glass, this is invitingly ripe on the nose with aromas of black cherry compote, raspberry coulis, lilac florals and choc mint slice, and hints of crushed autumn leaves. The palate opens generously, unfurling creamy fruit weight with juicy acidity, and chocolaty tannins framing the whole shebang. Complexity and deliciousness combined 05 JAN 2026

Oliver’s Taranga is one of McLaren Vale’s oldest family estates, with the Oliver family farming the same property since 1839. Six generations later, the vineyard remains at the heart of everything they do, with a strong focus on Mediterranean varieties suited to the Vale’s warm days and cooling sea breezes. The wines are crafted by winemaker Corrina Wright, who has expanded the range to explore Spanish and Italian grapes while maintaining a philosophy of balance, drinkability and food friendly structure. The Small Batch Mencía reflects that adventurous spirit.
Mencía thrives in warm climates when handled carefully, delivering fragrance and savoury detail rather than weight. Fruit is harvested to preserve freshness, and fermentation is managed to build colour and fine tannin without heaviness. Maturation is typically in seasoned oak to allow the vibrant fruit to lead. The aim is a bright, expressive red that sits comfortably alongside Grenache and Sangiovese in the Vale.
Bright ruby in colour, the aromas open with red cherry, cranberry and raspberry layered with dried herbs, violet and a subtle earthy spice. The palate is medium bodied and lively, with juicy red fruit wrapped in fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Savoury notes and a gentle mineral thread carry through a clean, energetic finish.
It pairs beautifully with tapas, grilled vegetables, charcuterie and lamb dishes. Best enjoyed in its youth for vibrancy and lift, it will cellar comfortably for five to eight years.
