d’Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache McLaren Vale is a character filled expression of old vine Grenache from one of South Australia’s most historic estates. d’Arenberg was established in 1912 and remains family owned, now led by fourth generation winemaker Chester Osborn. Known for his distinctive style and hands on approach, Osborn champions traditional methods including small batch fermentation and basket pressing. The Derelict Vineyard tells the story of old bush vine Grenache that was once neglected before being restored, reflecting McLaren Vale’s long history with Mediterranean varieties and its deep sandy soils over ironstone and clay.
The colour is vibrant crimson with a translucent ruby rim, typical of Grenache. Aromas are lifted and expressive, revealing raspberry, wild strawberry and red cherry layered with rose petal, dried herbs and a subtle hint of spice. There is an earthy undertone with whispers of anise and crushed stone that speak of McLaren Vale’s warm climate and ancient soils.
On the palate the wine is medium bodied and generous yet finely structured. Juicy red fruits glide across supple tannins, supported by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and balanced. Savoury elements of white pepper, dried thyme and gentle oak complexity add depth without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, smooth and quietly powerful, showing the charm and versatility of McLaren Vale Grenache.
Pair with slow roasted lamb shoulder, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, Moroccan spiced chicken or charcuterie with aged hard cheeses. It is delicious in its youth for its vibrant fruit but will cellar comfortably for eight to twelve years, developing further savoury and earthy nuances with time.
