The Empty Quarter blend reflects the adventurous spirit of Dune Wines, a small McLaren Vale project created by brothers Peter Lloyd and Duncan Lloyd, with Duncan responsible for the winemaking. The wines draw inspiration from Mediterranean varieties that thrive in the warm coastal climate of the Vale. Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro come together in this blend, sourced from carefully selected vineyards where sandy soils, sea breezes and abundant sunshine allow the fruit to develop depth while retaining freshness. The approach in the cellar is gentle and thoughtful, focusing on balance and drinkability while allowing the character of the vineyard sites to shine.
The wine shows a deep crimson colour with vibrant purple edges. Aromas lift with blackberry, dark plum and ripe cherry layered with hints of violet, dried herbs and warm spice. As it opens further notes of liquorice, olive tapenade and subtle earthy complexity emerge. The palate is rich yet energetic with fine tannins carrying flavours of dark berries, red plum and savoury spice across a supple frame. Shiraz brings depth and dark fruit, Grenache adds brightness and perfume while Mataro contributes structure and savoury character.
The finish is long and textured with a gentle warmth that reflects the McLaren Vale landscape. It drinks beautifully now and will continue to evolve over the next eight to ten years, pairing perfectly with grilled lamb, slow braised beef, roasted vegetables or Mediterranean inspired dishes rich in herbs and spice.
