A superb riesling from Sorell, to the east of Hobart, that's all crisp line and focused lime, Granny Smith apple and grapefruit with hints of clover and citrus blossom, crushed stone, pastis, lemongrass, sea spray, lemon sorbet and lime zest. Super crunchy and precise this one, with a sapid, saline acid backbone that provides all the drive in the world. Lots of energy here and such great thirst-slaking drinking.

94 points Special Value Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion, March 2026

Out in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, where the light feels a little sharper and the winds carry a chill even in summer, Riesling finds a beautifully pure expression. Parish Vineyard is a small, thoughtful site, and the Sorell bottling captures that sense of place with clarity. The vineyard sits on ancient soils with excellent drainage, and the long, slow ripening season allows flavours to build without sacrificing the piercing natural acidity that defines the region.

This is very much a modern Tasmanian take on Riesling, precise, aromatic and finely tuned. The cooler conditions around Sorell lend a slightly more delicate, floral edge compared to mainland examples, while still delivering intensity and drive.

Pale straw with a green flicker, the aromatics are lifted and detailed. Lime zest and lemon blossom lead, followed by green apple, white flowers and a faint hint of wet stone. There is a purity here that feels almost crystalline. The palate is tight and focused, citrus and orchard fruits carried along a line of bright acidity. A subtle mineral thread runs underneath, giving length and a refreshing, mouthwatering finish that lingers long after the last sip.

This style thrives alongside fresh, vibrant dishes. Oysters straight from the shell, sashimi, or grilled King George whiting with a squeeze of lemon all work effortlessly. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Thai salads or Vietnamese herbs, where the acidity cuts through and refreshes.

Drink it young for that zesty, energetic profile, or cellar for ten to fifteen years as it evolves into more complex, honeyed and toasty layers.

There’s a quiet precision here that feels very Tasmanian, clean air, cool evenings and a sense of purity that makes you slow down and pay attention.
