2025 Pooley Pinot Grigio, Coal River

Pooley Pinot Grigio from the Coal River Valley is a bright, elegantly textural and quietly detailed white that showcases why Tasmania has become one of Australia’s most exciting cool climate regions. The Pooley family farms sustainably on ancient sandstone and siltstone soils that deliver fine mineral tension and beautifully pure fruit. Cool days and very cold nights slow ripening right down, helping the grapes hold acidity while developing delicately layered flavours. Hand picking, gentle whole bunch pressing and fermentation in stainless steel preserve freshness, while a short rest on lees adds a soft, subtle creaminess to balance the crisp drive.

Aromas of white pear, Granny Smith apple and lemon zest rise first, followed by hints of nectarine, jasmine and fresh herbs. Beneath the brightness sits that Coal River hallmark of wet stone and coastal breeze, reminding you how close these vineyards are to the river and sea. As the wine breathes, notes of lime blossom, fennel seed and a little almond skin reveal added complexity.

The palate is sleek, vibrant and beautifully poised. Pear, citrus and peach skin flavours glide across a lightly silken texture before tightening into a refreshing mineral spine. Bright natural acidity keeps everything crisp and clean, while gentle lees influence rounds the edges without dulling the energy. The finish is long, dry and mouthwatering, lingering with orchard fruit, citrus oil and cool stony lift. It is delicious now but will gain a touch of honeyed and savoury nuance over the next couple of years.
