Provenance was established in the mid-1990s around a simple idea of showcasing cool-climate vineyard sites across western Victoria. Owner and winemaker Sam Vogel works mostly with select vineyards across Henty, Ballarat and Geelong. The Golden Plains Chardonnay brings these regions together in one bottle as an expression of what a Western Victorian Chardonnay could look like. Henty fruit provides the backbone and aromatic lift, while the Ballarat component adds structure and mineral precision. Geelong contributes richness and fruit weight from its rocky volcanic soils over limestone.
The fruit is whole bunch pressed, settled and racked to predominantly seasoned French oak for indigenous yeast fermentation at a cool temperature. Partial malolactic fermentation balances the natural acidity, and eight months on lees adds texture and a subtle almond complexity.
Pale gold, the nose shows nectarine, grilled peach, citrus and honeysuckle with cedar and a cool saline mineral thread. The palate is piquant and juicy with stone fruit, cashew and a quenching natural acidity that carries the wine to a long, lingering finish.
Consistently one of the best value Chardonnays made in Victoria. Enjoy with grilled scallops, creamy pastas or a roasted chicken with lemon and herb flavours.
