Robert Stein is one of Mudgee's most respected family wineries, established in 1976 by Robert and Lorna Stein. The now up to fifty-year-old vineyards produce fruit of natural freshness and regional character and are in the capable hands of Robert and Lorna’s grandson Jacob.
The Stein family's connection to Riesling runs deeper than most. Their ancestor Johann Stein brought the first Rhine Riesling cuttings to survive in Australia in 1838. Jacob deepened that connection further during years working vintages in Germany's Rheingau and Rheinhessen. He returned home with a conviction about what Riesling can do on the right site, and the wines have since become some of NSW's most awarded.
The Dry Riesling is the signature Stein expression of the variety. The grapes are grown at over 500 metres elevation on gravelly clay-loam soils ideal for producing fruit with intensity and natural acidity. Harvested early to preserve freshness, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented cool with natural yeasts in stainless steel to retain aromatic clarity and drive. The wine is left on lees for a short period to build subtle texture and length.
Expect the focused, precise character the wine is known for: lime zest, green apple and a touch of slate on the nose, with a palate that is dry, taut and cleanly mineral. The finish is long and refreshing with characteristic citrus persistence.
A wine to open on a weekend afternoon with friends or set aside for a few years. Good company for a Vietnamese style chicken salad or grilled freshwater trout with herbs.
