Spinifex has built a loyal following for wines that express the character of the Barossa through thoughtful vineyard sourcing and a gentle approach in the cellar. The winery was established by winemaker Pete Schell and his wife Magali Gely, who focus on working with mature vineyards across the Barossa Valley and surrounding regions. While Spinifex is widely known for its Grenache based reds, the Chenin Blanc has become a fascinating part of the portfolio, showing how well this Loire Valley variety can adapt to the Barossa climate when handled with restraint and care.
The fruit comes from carefully selected vineyards where warm days encourage flavour development while the naturally high acidity of Chenin Blanc preserves freshness and structure. Pete Schell works with a light touch in the winery, allowing the vineyard character and natural texture of the variety to take centre stage. Time on lees adds depth and complexity while maintaining the vibrant energy that defines the wine.
The wine shows a pale straw colour with bright green reflections. Aromas lift with quince, pear and green apple followed by hints of lemon zest, chamomile and delicate floral notes. As the wine opens further nuances of honey, almond and subtle spice begin to appear. The palate is vibrant yet textured with flavours of orchard fruit, citrus and a gentle waxy character typical of Chenin Blanc. Fresh acidity provides energy and balance, carrying the wine through a long, clean finish with a delicate mineral edge.
It is particularly well suited to seafood dishes, roast chicken, pork dishes or lightly spiced Asian flavours where the wine’s acidity and texture complement the food.
