A vibrant blend of western Tamar Valley with ample, rich and silky fruit
From the warm and dry 2025 season, this vibrant Chardonnay opens with aromas of ripe orchard fruit and preserved citrus. Light flinty notes emerge as it sits in the glass, along with buttery baked goods and toasted nuts. The palate offers ample, rich and silky fruit, with a clear line of acidity extending the flavours to a long, slightly chewy finish.
Try with pan-fried mulloway with roasted macadamia-shiro miso soubise, or if you don’t mind a bit of technicalities in the kitchen, a chicken ballotine stuffed with mixed mushrooms served with a master stock reduction and a sprinkling of brioche crumbs.
More about this wine
The fruit for this wine was whole bunch pressed and shortly settled ahead of fermentation with indigenous yeasts in mainly seasoned oak. Allowed partial malolactic conversion, the wine spent a total of nine months on full lees and a further two months in stainless steel before it was lightly filtered at bottling.
About this producer
Utzinger Wines is the Tamar Valley label of Mattias and Lauren Utzinger, he a Swiss-born winemaker, she a Tasmanian girl he met while travelling. They’ve farmed their high-density certified organic vineyard near Legana on the western slopes of the Tamar River since 2018. The five-hectare site has a northeasterly aspect and is planted primarily to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, with wines sitting in brown dermosol soils rich in ironstone gravel over moisture holding clay subsoils.
The black label wines are made from fruit grown in their own vineyard, while the white labels blend also use fruit from vineyards leased and managed by Matthias and Lauren.
