Medium-bodied Tamar Valley blend with perfumed cranberries, cherries and spice
The 2024 Pinot Noir is pretty and refined, with perfumed cranberry, cherry and rhubarb aromas and a savoury kick of earthy tobacco flavours. More earthy notes then emerge against a backdrop of chalky tannins that tighten up the finish. Enjoyable now but at its best in a couple of years. Drink to 2030.
91 points Angus Hughson for Vinous, July 2026
This wine is a blend of hand harvested fruit grown in western Tamar Valley. 30% of the fruit was kept as whole bunches as part of a carbonic maceration and a cold soak ahead of fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The pressed wine rested in seasoned French oak barrels and was bottled without fining or filtration.
About this producer
Utzinger Wines is the Tamar Valley label of Mattias and Lauren Utzinger, he a Swiss-born winemaker, she a Tasmanian girl he met while travelling. They’ve farmed their high-density certified organic vineyard near Legana on the western slopes of the Tamar River since 2018. The five-hectare site has a northeasterly aspect and is planted primarily to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, with wines sitting in brown dermosol soils rich in ironstone gravel over moisture holding clay subsoils.
The black label wines are made from fruit grown in their own vineyard, while the white labels blend also use fruit from vineyards leased and managed by Matthias and Lauren.
