Filius Chardonnay is the younger sibling in the Vasse Felix family, but it carries the DNA of one of Margaret River’s founding estates. Vasse Felix was established in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, who recognised the region’s potential long before it was proven. Today the estate is owned by the Holmes à Court family, with Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock shaping a precise, site driven style built on decades of viticultural knowledge. Filius means son in Latin, and the wine reflects that idea, vibrant, energetic and connected to the estate’s pedigree.
Fruit is sourced from Vasse Felix vineyards across the Margaret River region, particularly sites influenced by maritime breezes and gravelly loam soils that build flavour while retaining natural acidity. Harvest timing is critical to capture citrus lift and phenolic ripeness. Whole bunch pressing protects finesse, fermentation takes place in a mix of stainless steel and French oak, and maturation on fine lees adds texture without overwhelming the wine with oak sweetness. The philosophy is freshness first, with structure and length following close behind.
Pale straw in colour, the aromas open with white peach, lemon zest and nectarine layered with cashew, subtle flint and a hint of spice. The palate is medium bodied and lively, with citrus and stone fruit carried by bright acidity and a gently creamy mid palate. Flavours glide into a long, clean finish with a mineral edge that keeps everything focused.
It pairs beautifully with seafood, roast chicken, grilled prawns and creamy pasta dishes. Drinking beautifully now for its vibrancy and balance, it will cellar comfortably for six to ten years, gaining nutty and savoury nuance.
This is Margaret River Chardonnay with serious pedigree at an accessible price, fresh, textural and outstanding value.
