2026 Brokenwood Pinot Gris, Beechworth

Pinot Gris grapes can be quite coloured, even pink, yet this wine is a lovely youthful yellow tinged green. Pear, ginger and white florals on the nose, with nashi pear and beeswax flavours on the palate carried by a crisp acidic backbone. Excellent fruit weight, which is supported by the phenolic texture from the skin contact.

Some Pinot Gris wines can age well, but the Brokenwood is intended for early drinking. It’s a bottle you pop open while setting out small bites, slicing ingredients, and chatting in the kitchen. Would be great with flatbreads filled with falafel, pickled turnips, fresh herbs and a tahini-lemon dressing. Or try with Larb Moo, a Thai grilled pork belly salad!

About this wine

The 2025 Brokenwood Pinot Gris is a blend of fruit grown in Victoria’s Beechworth and Alpine Valleys. A warm and dry season resulted in an early harvest, with fruit machine picked at night in excellent condition. The grapes weer crushed locally, and the racked juice transported to Hunter Valley for fermentation mostly in stainless steel, while a small portion of the pressings component was fermented in old French oak barrels.

About this producer

Hunter Valley based Brokenwood was established in 1970 by Tony Albert, John Beeston, and James Halliday, with first vines planted in Pokolbin the year after. Since the early 1980s fruit sourcing has expanded beyond the Hunter, and today, the well-regarded wines are made from grapes grown in Orange, Central Ranges, Gundagai, Canberra District and Tumbarumba (NSW) as well as Beechworth (VIC), Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale (SA), and finally Margaret River (WA).

The winemaking team is lead by Stuart Hordern and Kate Sturgess, while work in the 64-hectare vineyards is guided by Katrina Barry.
