Base 21. Disg. Jun 25
Wiry and saline, the NV (2021) Extra Brut Complantée Grand Cru is classic Agrapart all the way. As a reminder, the Complantée is a blend of Pinot Noir, Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Chardonnay. Readers who like vibrant, floral Champagnes will adore this. Tense and sculpted to the core , the Complantée is so expressive in this tasting. Citrus oil, chalk, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks bristle with energy. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.

Pascal Agrapart has spent decades challenging conventional ideas about Champagne, producing wines that speak as much of their vineyards as they do of the region's celebrated winemaking traditions. Based in Avize, the Agrapart family has cultivated vines in the Côte des Blancs since the late nineteenth century, with Pascal and his son Ambroise now responsible for some of Champagne's most sought after grower bottlings. Complantee is one of their most fascinating creations, an unusual field blend that explores the remarkable diversity of grape varieties once commonly planted together in the region. It is a Champagne for the curious, and one that reveals a very different side of the Agrapart philosophy.
The fruit comes from a small Grand Cru vineyard in Avize planted with six traditional Champagne varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc. Rather than treating each grape separately, the vines are grown together and harvested as a single field blend, allowing their individual personalities to contribute to the wine's distinctive character. Fermentation and maturation in oak help develop texture and complexity, while a low dosage preserves freshness and the vineyard's chalky mineral expression. Disgorged in 2025, this release combines the vitality of its unusual blend with the savoury depth that comes from extended ageing on lees.
Pale gold with a fine, persistent bead. Ripe pear, yellow apple and preserved lemon mingle with white flowers, toasted almond and fresh brioche. Subtle notes of quince, dried herbs and chalk add an intriguing savoury dimension. The palate is generous yet beautifully energetic, with orchard fruit, citrus and a creamy mousse supported by vibrant acidity. There is a lovely combination of richness and mineral tension, while delicate spice, almond and a faint saline character carry through a long, dry finish. Distinctive, complex and wonderfully engaging, this is a Champagne that rewards attention.
Grilled scallops with browned butter, lobster with lemon and herbs or crab ravioli would all make excellent companions. It would also be delicious with wild mushroom gougères, roast cauliflower with hazelnut butter or a delicate Comté soufflé. Serve cool rather than icy cold in a generous white wine glass, giving the wine time to reveal its unusual aromatic character.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2038+. The wine's concentration, natural acidity and recent disgorgement suggest excellent ageing potential, with additional savoury and toasted complexity developing over the next decade.
