Kreglinger Rose Brut, Pipers Brook

A sparkling rosé blend of 60% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 10% pinot meunier. A light blush in the glass and showing a fine, energetic bead and mousse. Attractive red cherry, red apple and redcurrant fruits with hints of raspberry, redcurrant jelly, freshly baked apple turnover, crushed stone, sea spray and meadow flowers. There's a touch of soft spice and a daub of cream on the palate, the flavours expanding and being propelled along nicely by a fine, saline acidity with a swell of dosage on the exit.

Tasmania's cool northern coastline is a wonderful place for sparkling wine, and Kreglinger has a fascinating story behind it. The Belgian Kreglinger family established its Australian wine interests in the late twentieth century, building on a European trading heritage dating back to 1797. At Pipers Brook, cool maritime breezes and a long, gentle ripening season provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the classic grapes of traditional method sparkling wine.

Delicate salmon pink with copper reflections and a fine, persistent bead. Wild strawberry, fresh raspberry and red apple mingle with rose petals, citrus zest and a hint of toasted brioche. Bright acidity keeps everything lively, while time on lees adds a lovely creamy texture and subtle pastry notes. Elegant, refreshing and just a little indulgent, with a crisp, lingering finish.

Wonderful with freshly shucked oysters and raspberry mignonette, crispy prawn wontons with ginger, or smoked salmon blinis with crème fraîche and dill. Equally delightful with strawberry and pistachio tartlets.
