Dune is the project of brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd, whose family name runs deep in McLaren Vale through Coriole. The Pyla is a field blend of Mediterranean varieties grown on the same Blewitt Springs sandy soils that underpins the entire Dune project. Nero d'Avola, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Negroamaro make up the core, with smaller contributions of Montepulciano and Grenache completing the picture.
Fruit is hand-picked and fermented with a high proportion of whole berries before ten months in seasoned oak. The approach builds fragrance and texture without imposing structure or weight, an Pyla stays light on its feet, especially for the region.
The 2023 is intensely perfumed and immediately inviting: floral lift, ripe cherry, lilac and sweet herbs on the nose, with a Campari-like bitter note adding intrigue. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, graceful tannins, good refreshment and a savoury, moreish finish.
This wine is made for a rich spread of food. Pour it alongside chargrilled lamb, pizza, pasta or anything from a wood-fired oven.
