2008 Piper-heidsieck is 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay from 20 crus, including Verzy, Ludes, Ay, Avise and Vertus, aged 7.5 years on lees with 10g/L dosage.
2008 vintage Champagnes display a rare blend of power and finesse, with the structure and acidity to age gracefully. It wasn’t an easy growing season, with disease pressures in the vines necessitating strict selection and ultimately resulting in low yields. But clement weather in September, with good diurnal shifts, resulted in ripe fruit with healthy levels of acidity. Expect plenty of classic, nervy Champagnes that will reward patience without necessarily requiring it.

Bright, medium yellow colour with a strongly toasty bouquet, even a trace of slightly burnt-toast. The palate is full and rich and strong, with big, mouth-filling flavour and real generosity. This is a superb full-bodied wine, and it finishes very dry and cleansing. Long and satisfying. A good food wine - it has real palate strength and backbone. Drink now to 2022. Tasted 24 APR 2018
