A solid 2017 with a linear flow of fine tannins through the center of the wine providing structure and backbone that gives the wine lovely energy. Lots of blackberries, ripe strawberries and blue fruit. Long and vivid. Drink after 2024.

The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo bares the signature of Enrico Scavino on the front label as witness to the generational change at this estate, and countless others across the Langhe, that push forward through time thanks to a continual ownership handoff that goes from father to son. This classic wine is bright and full of vitality, showing a more cheerful side to this often austere Piedmont grape. Dark fruit and cassis segue to cedar and camphor ash.

An expression of bright cherry, plum and licorice marks this supple red. Fleshy and balanced, with a line of firm, chalky tannins girding the tar- and eucalyptus-tinged finish. Should be enjoyable soon. Best from 2023 through 2035

From a blend of estate vineyards across Barolo, Paolo Scavino Barolo DOCG offers a beautifully balanced expression of Nebbiolo that bridges tradition and modern precision. The Scavino family, with roots in Castiglione Falletto dating back to the early 20th century, has become one of Barolo’s leading producers under Enrico Scavino and now his daughters Enrica and Elisa. Their approach focuses on careful vineyard work, shorter fermentations and precise ageing to preserve fruit clarity while maintaining structure.

A luminous garnet red with brick tinges sits in the glass. Aromas unfold with rose petal, red cherry and raspberry layered with orange peel, spice, dried herbs and a gentle earthy note. There is an immediate sense of elegance and aromatic lift.

The palate is medium to full bodied and finely structured, delivering vibrant red fruit framed by firm, polished tannins and bright acidity. Notes of cranberry, liquorice, tea leaf and savoury earth build through the mid palate, leading to a long, persistent finish that feels both graceful and quietly powerful. This is a Barolo that shows beautifully in its youth with aeration, yet will evolve over ten to fifteen years into more complex, savoury territory.

Braised beef with herbs, truffle pasta shared slowly, or duck with orange and spice laid out at the centre of the table. A late evening pairing of Verdi or a rich orchestral piece from Mahler, the wine unfolding with that same sense of depth, structure and Italian drama.
