Shiraz sourced from the western subregion of Greenock, destemmed, wild fermented and aged in cement tanks for 10 months. Some lovely ferrous-edged Greenock black fruit characters here with hints of dark chocolate, licorice, exotic spice, struck flint, olive tapenade and earth. Strong, flexing ironstone tannins and a meaty, broody edge to the fruit flow that's lifted by vivid acidity leading to a tight, black-fruited flow on the finish.

JC’s Own Stratum Shiraz is a powerful yet finely judged Barossa Valley Shiraz that leans into depth, structure and site expression rather than sheer sweetness. The name Stratum is a nod to the layered geology of the Barossa, ancient soils built over millions of years that give Shiraz its natural authority, savoury drive and sense of place. Warm days deliver intensity and flavour, while cooler nights help retain freshness and shape.

JC’s Own is the personal label of winemaker JC (John Charles) who has spent decades working across the Barossa and Eden Valley, building a reputation for thoughtful, detail driven wines. Stratum sits at the serious end of the range, sourced from low yielding vineyards and made with patience and restraint. Oak is used to support structure and complexity, not to dominate, allowing the fruit and regional character to lead.

In the glass, the wine is deep and brooding. Blackberry, black plum and mulberry sit at the core, layered with dark chocolate, liquorice and cracked spice. With air, savoury notes of earth, ironstone and dried herbs emerge, adding complexity and a distinctly Barossan feel.

On the palate, JC’s Own Stratum Shiraz is full bodied and confidently structured. Concentrated dark fruit flows through the mid palate, supported by firm, fine grained tannins that give length and authority without harshness. Acidity is well judged, keeping the wine balanced and food friendly despite its power. The finish is long, savoury and persistent, lingering with dark fruit, spice and mineral depth.

This is a Shiraz built for the table and the cellar. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef, barbecue, game or richly flavoured winter dishes. Drinking well now with decanting, it will reward cellaring over ten to fifteen years, developing deeper savoury and earthy complexity.

JC’s Own Stratum Shiraz is confident, layered and unapologetically Barossa. A serious Shiraz that delivers depth, structure and a strong sense of terroir, while still remaining composed and drinkable.
