An Amarone that nudges Port, such is the density and liqueur-like notes of cocoa nibs, mocha, root spices and dried cherries. The tannins restrain the flavors into a sense of composure on one hand, while drying out the finish on the other. Very drying. Presumably, this simply needs time, or at least it is best to hope so. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

From the sun drenched hillsides of Valpolicella Classica comes a flagship Amarone that represents the pinnacle of Masi’s historic expertise. The Boscaini family has guided Masi since the eighteenth century, becoming one of Veneto’s most influential custodians of the appassimento method. Costasera, meaning slope facing the setting sun, refers to the estate’s prized hillside vineyards in the Classico zone, where afternoon warmth ensures full ripening of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. The Riserva selection is crafted only in exceptional vintages, with extended drying and maturation to build greater depth, structure and longevity.
In the glass the colour is deep garnet with brick edged reflections, immediately signalling concentration and age worthiness. The bouquet is intense and layered, revealing dried black cherry, fig and plum intertwined with cocoa, sweet spice and tobacco. There is a distinctive balsamic lift alongside notes of leather and forest floor, reflecting both the traditional appassimento process and extended ageing.
On the palate it is full bodied, powerful and beautifully structured. Concentrated dark fruit forms the core, supported by firm yet velvety tannins and balanced acidity that prevent heaviness. Layers of dark chocolate, espresso, dried herbs and subtle oak unfold through the mid palate, leading to a long, warming finish marked by spice, dried cherry and savoury depth. Despite its richness, there is clarity and definition that define benchmark Amarone from the Classico heartland.
Pair with braised beef short ribs, venison with juniper, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or rich porcini risotto. While impressive now with extended decanting, this Riserva is built for serious cellaring and will evolve gracefully for twenty five years or more, developing complex notes of leather, truffle and dried fruit.
