Charlie Melton's Nine Popes was one of the first wines that make me fall in love with Barossa wines, and it still makes me go all gooey-eyed. It's old-vine grenache and shiraz aged for 27 months in French oak (50% new). Wonderfully fragrant red and dark plum fruits with high tones of raspberry coulis and orange blossom. Under the fruit lies layered spice and hints of red licorice, redcurrant jelly, roasting meats and earth. The fruit on the palate is pure and true, the tannins tight, powdery and fine and there is a lovely cadence to the acidity as it propels the wine forward. It's still, and always has been, a joy to drink.

Charles Melton Nine Popes GSM from the Barossa Valley is a bold and expressive red wine that showcases the exceptional quality and diversity of Australian wine. Made from a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre (GSM), this wine is a tribute to the traditional Rhône-style blends of France, but with the unique influence of the Barossa Valley terroir. Charles Melton, a highly regarded winemaker, has long been known for his commitment to producing wines that are both approachable and age-worthy, with a focus on balance, complexity, and the true expression of the grapes.

The Nine Popes GSM is named in honor of the nine popes who have made significant contributions to the wine world, and it is a blend that embodies the rich history and culture of the Barossa Valley. The wine is crafted from select vineyards in the Barossa, where the warm climate and diverse soils provide the perfect environment for growing these three varietals. The Grenache brings vibrant red fruit flavors, the Shiraz adds depth and spice, and the Mourvèdre contributes structure and complexity.

The wine is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, which imparts subtle oak flavors while allowing the fruit to remain the focal point. The result is a wine that is rich and full-bodied, with aromas of ripe red berries, dark plum, and hints of spice, herbs, and a touch of leather. On the palate, Charles Melton Nine Popes GSM offers a velvety texture, with flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, layered with nuances of pepper, earth, and subtle oak. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, creating a smooth and balanced wine with a long, satisfying finish.

This GSM is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. It is an excellent match for grilled meats, such as lamb, beef, or sausages, as well as hearty stews, pasta with rich sauces, and aged cheeses like cheddar or gouda. Its bold flavors and structured tannins also make it a great wine to enjoy with charcuterie or roasted vegetables.
