A lovely warm-climate sangiovese, reminiscent of certain expressions from Tuscany's Maremma region. Mid-weighted of feel and effortless of texture, sangiovese's scape of frisky tannins and perky acidity toned by the climate yet not, by any stretch, nullified. There is grip, compression and succulent, sappy length to this thanks to the structural architecture as much as the intensity of fruit: a broad spread of damson plum, dried herb, a whiff of leaf, red cherry and baking spices. A delicious everyday go-to.

Juxtaposed Sangiovese from McLaren Vale is a vibrant and expressive red wine that captures the essence of this renowned South Australian wine region. McLaren Vale, with its Mediterranean climate and diverse soils, is known for producing wines with intensity, balance, and depth. Sangiovese, the flagship grape of Tuscany, finds a unique expression in McLaren Vale, where the region’s warm days and cool nights allow the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complex fruit flavors while retaining natural acidity. Juxtaposed, with its minimalist approach to winemaking, has crafted a wine that beautifully blends the traditional characteristics of Sangiovese with the richness of McLaren Vale’s terroir.
The Sangiovese grapes for this wine are carefully sourced from select vineyards in McLaren Vale, where old vines contribute to low yields and concentrated fruit. The warm Mediterranean climate, along with the cooling sea breezes, helps the grapes develop ripe, dark fruit flavors while maintaining freshness. The winemaking process focuses on minimal intervention to allow the fruit to express its natural character. The wine is fermented in small batches and aged in French oak barrels, which adds subtle layers of complexity while preserving the fruit-forward nature of the wine.
In the glass, Juxtaposed Sangiovese has a deep ruby-red color, reflecting its intensity and depth. The nose is aromatic and inviting, with bright red fruit aromas such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, complemented by hints of dried herbs, tomato leaf, and spice. There’s a touch of earthiness and a slight floral note, which add complexity to the bouquet and reflect the influence of McLaren Vale’s terroir.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with smooth tannins and a fresh, lively acidity that provides balance and structure. The red fruit flavors are vibrant and juicy, with cherry, raspberry, and cranberry leading the way. The wine’s natural acidity ensures it remains fresh and food-friendly, while the oak aging adds subtle layers of spice and vanilla. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering red fruit and a touch of earthiness that leaves a refined, lasting impression.
Juxtaposed Sangiovese is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright fruit and refreshing acidity make it an excellent match for Italian-inspired cuisine, such as pasta with tomato-based sauces, pizza, or roasted meats like lamb or pork. It also pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, grilled vegetables, or soft cheeses like Brie or goat cheese. Whether enjoyed on its own or with a meal, this Sangiovese is a perfect example of McLaren Vale’s ability to create expressive and food-friendly wines.
