This has the creaminess and gracefulness we expect from this famous appellation. Good concentration on the front- and mid-palates, the very clean finish both sleek and precise. Tasted as a cask sample, but shortly before bottling.
91-92 points James Suckling
Puligny Montrachet is all about line and precision, and Olivier Leflaive leans into that beautifully with this 2021. Drawing from well placed parcels across the village, the focus is on clarity and balance, capturing that classic interplay between citrus drive and subtle richness that defines great Puligny.
The 2021 vintage shows a cooler, more finely etched profile. Aromatics are lifted and detailed, lemon zest, green apple and white peach, with a gentle floral note and a distinct chalky, flinty edge. There is a quiet savoury layer too, almond, hazelnut and a touch of spice, adding depth without softening the structure.
On the palate it is medium bodied with a tight, focused core. Citrus and stone fruit are carried by a firm line of acidity that gives the wine energy and length. The texture is refined rather than broad, with lees work adding just a hint of creaminess before the wine tightens again on the finish, leaving a long, mineral impression.
Olivier Leflaive’s approach is all about precision, careful fruit selection, gentle pressing and measured oak, allowing the vineyard character to come through with clarity and finesse.
This is a brilliant partner for seafood that leans toward purity and detail. Think oysters with a squeeze of lemon, scallop crudo, or grilled whiting with herbs. It also works beautifully with dishes like prawn and chilli pasta, a simple roast chicken with thyme, or a zucchini and ricotta tart, where the wine’s acidity and mineral line keep everything fresh and focused.
Drinking beautifully now with a bit of air, it will reward patience over the next eight to twelve years, developing more nutty, honeyed complexity while holding its structure.
