2021 Tellurian Riesling, Heathcote

Tellurian Riesling is a finely cut, expressive white that shows a lesser seen but very compelling side of Heathcote. While the region is best known for Shiraz, its elevated sites and ancient Cambrian soils also suit Riesling, delivering wines with clarity, mineral drive and natural tension. Warm days help build flavour, while cool nights preserve acidity, giving this Riesling both intensity and line.

Tellurian Wines is led by Alister Purbrick, whose focus on site expression and thoughtful winemaking runs through the entire range. Riesling is handled with a light touch. Fruit is picked early to capture freshness, fermented cool in stainless steel and bottled without oak, allowing the vineyard and variety to speak clearly. The style is dry, precise and built for both immediate pleasure and ageing.

In the glass, the wine is bright and lifted. Lime zest, lemon juice and green apple lead, followed by white florals, talc and a distinct wet stone note. The aromatics are clean and focused, with no excess sweetness or overt tropical character.

On the palate, Tellurian Riesling is dry, linear and mouthwatering. Citrus flavours drive straight through the palate, supported by bright, chalky acidity that gives real energy and length. The texture is fine and taut rather than broad, finishing with a persistent lime pith and mineral edge that lingers long after the wine has gone.

This is a Riesling that thrives with food. It pairs beautifully with oysters, shellfish, Asian inspired dishes, salads or anything that benefits from acidity and lift. While delicious in its youth for its freshness and drive, it will also reward cellaring over eight to twelve years, developing classic toast, lime marmalade and subtle honeyed notes.
