Medium-depth red-purple colour; aromas of freshly turned earth, dried leaf litter and terra cotta. Dry, woody spices too. The wine is medium-full bodied and very drying on the palate with liberal tannins which are ripe and round and at the same time drying. An interesting contast with the Hickinbotham wine. 19 JUL 2023 Drink 2024–2035

#2 of 62 2022 Grenache from McLaren Vale

The belly dancer of the range. Exotic and frisky and gorgeous. So balletic of feel. This is a thoroughbred, suggestive of Indian spices and carnal corners. Clove, bergamot, kirsch, cinnamon spice and a waft of optimism, manifest in the most long-limbed reach of tannic bristle and maritime freshness that it brings a tear.

Sourced from the old bush vine block on the Wait Vineyard, in Blewitt Springs. Arguably the most filigreed and complex of these single-vineyard iterations by virtue of its brood and carnal complexities: blood orange seeped with kirsch, woodsmoke and clove. Like the finest Sicilian-accented negroni. Straddles pinosity and nebbiolo-inspired boniness all at once, while laying the structural lattice to define a long, thrilling ride to the finish. Yet there is the mescal and dill-pickle note suggesting a bit more ripeness may be not such a bad idea
