A big, lovable kind of shiraz that carries plenty of ripe, sweet fruit, spice and oak. Each component is amplified and, for many of us, that is indeed what makes the grape beloved. Black cherry, dark plum, chocolate, earth and a world of deep spice and woodsmoke oak. Dense and concentrated with ripe tannins aplenty running long.

Tucked into the cool foothills of Victoria’s High Country, Billy Button Wines has built a loyal following for wines that capture the personality of the Alpine Valleys. The label is the creation of winemaker Jo Marsh, a respected figure in Australian wine who has spent many years championing the diverse vineyards scattered through north east Victoria. The Beloved Shiraz is one of her signature wines, sourced from cool climate sites in the Alpine Valleys where the altitude and fresh mountain air help preserve brightness and aromatic lift. The region’s varied soils and cooler conditions allow Shiraz to show a more elegant and spicy side compared with warmer Australian regions.
The colour shows a deep crimson core with vibrant purple highlights. Aromas rise with juicy blackberry, plum and dark cherry supported by notes of black pepper, violet and subtle savoury spice. As the wine opens further hints of liquorice, dried herbs and gentle earthy tones begin to appear. The palate is medium bodied yet richly flavoured, with smooth tannins and lively acidity carrying flavours of dark berries, spice and a touch of cocoa through to a long balanced finish.
This expressive cool climate Shiraz drinks beautifully now yet will continue to develop over the next six to ten years. It pairs wonderfully with grilled lamb cutlets, slow cooked beef dishes, smoky barbecue flavours or roasted vegetables seasoned with herbs.
