Aromas of red berries, cherries and plums, lent relief by scents of spices and violets, Bonneau du Martray's 2022 Corton Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, suave and lively, with refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish, it transcends what I would have thought possible for this bottling a decade ago. This saw 12 months in 228-liter barrels, followed by five months in 500-liter barrels that were previously used for white wine.

From the historic hill of Corton, Bonneau du Martray Corton Rouge Grand Cru is a rare and quietly compelling expression of Pinot Noir from a domaine best known for its Chardonnay. With centuries of history and a deep commitment to organic farming, Bonneau du Martray approaches Corton Rouge with the same precision and respect for terroir, focusing on parcels planted on limestone rich soils that bring both structure and mineral definition.

A deep ruby garnet with luminous clarity fills the glass. Aromas unfold with red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry layered with rose petal, spice and a subtle earthy, iron tinged note that speaks to the Corton hillside. There is a sense of quiet intensity, finely detailed and composed.

The palate is medium to full bodied and structured, delivering vibrant red fruit framed by firm, finely etched tannins and bright acidity. Notes of cranberry, clove, forest floor and a distinct mineral edge build through the mid palate, leading to a long, persistent finish that feels both powerful and refined. This is a Grand Cru with real presence, built to evolve over fifteen to twenty years into layers of truffle, dried florals and savoury complexity.

Roast duck with crispy skin, game birds with herbs, or a rich mushroom and lentil dish shared slowly as the evening deepens. A late night pairing of Bach’s Cello Suites or something equally profound from Shostakovich, the wine unfolding with the same sense of structure, depth and quiet intensity.
