2022 Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz, Barossa Valley

An impressive, elegantly crafted Shiraz from the Ebenezer subregion within the Barossa. So much to like in this rich and lavish, highly approachable Shiraz. The depth and concentration of the fruit have demanded 40% new French oak, which has been handled effortlessly. Deep chocolate and a little ironstone complexity are a compelling combination. Firmish thread of tannin and oak in balance will handle cellaring. Drink to 2040.

A solid, well-made and linear shiraz with blackberries, dried herbs, meat and some baking spices. It's medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Vivid, with a kick of peppercorn on the palate, balancing with the rich core of fruit. Fleshy, generous and in control, with a flavorful, persistent finish. Drink or hold.

Ben Glaetzer is pretty darn good at rolling out classic Barossan wines that over-deliver on both flavour and value for money. Deeply coloured and packed with ripe blackberry, black cherry and stewed plum with an understory of dark spice, dark chocolate bullets, choc-mint, vanillin oak, violets, olive tapenade and earth. Deeply fruited, with a thick seam of chalky tannin. Those flavours roll on for a good amount of time for an 'entry level' shiraz. Drink to 2038.

The vibrant 2022 Shiraz Bishop packs quite a punch with lashings of cherry brandy, new leather and a kick of sweet oak. This is well constructed with luscious flavors accented by bright acidity and chewy tannins offering up a muscular mouthfeel which will soften over time. Drink to 2033.

Aromas of plum, mulberry, spice, earth, bramble and woodsy edge. Dark fruited, mouth-filing, generously flavoured and straightforward in its delivery. The tannins are firm and grippy and the acidity is perky and punchy. Drink to 2035.

The Glaetzer family has been a part Barossa’s viticultural history since 1888, and Ben Glaetzer produces some of the most recognised wines of the region from dry-grown vineyards in the Ebenezer area. Working with a small group of third and fourth generation growers, his rich, intense and expressive wines are for many the epitome of Barossa in the glass.

The 2022 Barossa season was cool and long, resulting in elegant, aromatic wines of good structure. The Bishop from this year is Ebenezer fruit from 35- to 120-year-old Shiraz vines fermented in one- and two-tonne open fermenters with extended maceration, matured for 16 months in French oak hogshead barrels of which 40% were new.

Approachable now, this would have the capacity to cellar for several years in a cool, dark spot.
